This is down to the fact that many of these products aren't strong enough to cut through the dirt and as too much elbow grease is used the leather sofas top coat can be damaged.

We where repairing a leather sofa in Liverpool today that had this very problem. Because it was a cream leather suite and was used by a big family it got quite grubby looking. Our client had actually been using baby wipes (containing alcohol) as well as scouring pads to clean the leather. After time the top coat protecting the leather had come away, followed by the cream colour underneath.

Dave matched the colour of the leather and airbrushed the area, followed by replacing the topcoat to remedy the problem.

What is the best way to clean a carpet?

Hot water extraction -

This is the main method Dirtbusters use to clean carpets all over Liverpool and Merseyside. Its also the method recommended by carpet manufacturers. This method uses portable or truckmounted equipment to spray heated cleaning solution directly into the carpet pile. Powerful vacuums then extract out the cleaner along with the dirt. Done correctly the carpet should by dry whithin 4 hours.

Bonnet cleaning -

This can give great results on commercial low profile carpets but isn't so great on domestic carpet. The carpet is sprayed with a solution to loosen any dirt (same as with hot water extraction) and then a large absorbent pad is then used to remove the dirt. The results can look good but it simply does not remove the same amount of trapped carpet dirt as hwe.

Dry carpet cleaning -

This method is great as it is pretty much dry when completed, but again, the results don't compare to hwe. The carpet is sprinkled with a powdered compound that is then brushed through the carpet pile. The soil particles are encapsulated into the absorbent dry compound and are removed by vacuuming.
